Dentures
Missing teeth can interfere with your ability to speak and eat properly, and they take away your self-confidence by affecting your smile. For many dental patients in Newport Beach, dentures are a solution that restore function, appearance, and good oral health.
What are Dentures?
Dentures are removable prosthetic replacement teeth. Because they are custom-made to fit your mouth, they are comfortable and allow you to once again speak, eat, and smile with confidence. Depending on your specific needs, your Pierce Aesthetic Dentist may recommend either complete or partial dentures.
Complete dentures are the correct option when all of your existing teeth are missing or severely decayed or damaged and extraction is necessary for good oral health. They can be conventional or immediate.
Immediate dentures are made in advance and can be placed in the mouth as soon as the teeth are removed, so you don’t have to try to function without teeth while your mouth heals. They are considered a temporary solution while your conventional dentures are being made.
Complete conventional dentures are specifically manufactured to fit your mouth after your teeth have been removed, swelling has gone down, and the healing process is complete. They are ready in approximately 8 to 12 weeks after extraction.
Partial dentures are the recommendation when there are healthy natural teeth that can support the prosthetic base and replacement teeth. Because they fill the gap created by missing teeth, partial dentures are also known as dental bridges.
How are Dentures Made?
The process for getting dentures takes a few weeks and several appointments:
- Your dentist will take impressions of your jaw, measuring spacing and movement.
- A wax modelmatching the exact shape of your dentures will be made. Before your final dentures are cast, you will “try in” this model multiple times. Together with your Pierce Aesthetic dental team, you will evaluate the model for fit, shape, color, and overall appearance.
- The final denture is cast and fitted.
- As you practice with and get used to your new dentures, Pierce Aesthetics can make any necessary adjustments to alleviate any unnecessary discomfort.
Getting Used to Dentures
Minor irritation, soreness, and excess saliva production are normal until your mouth adjusts to the presence of your new dentures. You may also need to practice eating and speaking certain words until it feels completely natural.
You don’t have to worry that dentures will make you look drastically different. Remember, they are specially-made to fit your mouth as naturally as possible, Overall, they will be barely noticeable, and depending on the prior condition of your teeth, dentures are more likely to IMPROVE your appearance.
Are Dentures Right for YOU?
Although dental implants are increasingly becoming the preferred option to correct the issue of missing teeth, not everyone is a good candidate for implants.
